Royal Alloy Durian Ride

8 classic scooters + 13 enthusiasts + 100kg of durians = Durian Ride

Durian Ride, this is what happens when a classic scooter fan is crazy about durian.  That sums up the durian ride, a maiden event by Royal Alloy Scooter Club Malaysia (RASM) over the weekend.  The event is as straightforward as other ride events, but what makes this a bit unique from others is the Royal Alloy (RA) machinery.

 RA Background in Malaysia

According to RA's authorized dealer in Malaysia, Chear Global Sdn Bhd, the brand was brought in 2019.  At that time, the space for the classic scooters was already fulfilled by Vespa and Scomadi in Malaysia.  Hence it probably explains the oversight of the fans and the 2-years MCO period also helps the delays putting the brand at the centre stage together with the others.

However, the landscape changed in 2022 with post-MCO or as we entered the Endemic phase. As a result, the RA brand starting to gain traction among classic scooter enthusiasts.  Despite having a British origin, the brand is assembled in the neighbouring country, Thailand.  Just like the other scooter names.  Thus, we are enjoying some of the price perks.
I won't go into the details here. Perhaps I will save it for another round.

The Durian Ride

RASCM's president, Professeur Fino
Now, let's get into the details.  The event was about an hour's ride, about 70km from KL to Bentong.  It was organized by the RASCM's president, Professeur Fino and Karim as the event's host. The idea was triggered by the members' request to meet and coincidently falls during the durian season.  Putting the twos together hence the durian ride.

There was a small fee collected just to cover the necessities.  It was opened about 3-weeks before the ride, and 13 members heeded the calling.  One may assume that it was a small take-up, but given the fact memberships numbers and the age of the club, it was a good take-up.  Also, there was another big event held that day to split the participation further.   The ride starts around 9am and ends at 4pm with fabulous weather throughout the day.

Most importantly, the event went as planned, and everyone had a great time.  Therefore, it can be considered a successful event.

What Matters Most

Looking at the technical aspect of the ride, it is pretty much given.  However, having experienced the ride, three (3) other things popped up in my head.  Namely, the journey, visibility and experiences.

The  Journey -  If it weren't for the event, most members would not take the trouble to ride to Bentong.  More so, just to get a bite of durian.  Being city dwellers in a concrete jungle, this event was a therapeutic ride for most of the members.  However, the lush green scenery and refreshing air along the way were eye-opening.  Not to mention the friendly people that we meet along the way.  It was a quick getaway and recharge journey just beyond the outskirt of bustling KL-city.

The Visibility - Royal Alloy is still a foreign name and presence in the Malaysian landscape.  This event somewhat helps to narrow the gap.  The route used itself is famous among riders.  The beeline of RA scooters along the 70km route was definitely a looker.  It at least piqued the interest of other riders in the machine and brand in general.  Some couldn't hold their interest and ride along to quench their curiosity and ask questions.  It is a good way for RASCM to promote itself to the public.

The Experiences - Being classic scooter enthusiasts, most members are either casual riders or new and unfamiliar with the machine.  Noted, some are veteran riders in the group.  But for most, this was a safe zone for them to explore their capability and hones their riding skill, just like any other motor convoy.  The hot and long winding road of Karak Highway might be a new experience for some.  This then will not only test their skillset and endurance but also helps build their confidence over time.

All in all ...

One thing is for sure, the camaraderie was developed during the ride, which will further strengthen the RA's support group.  This is vital as the brand, and the exposure is still at the infant stage among the users. So every bit of help would make a difference.

Owh ya, to conclude, there are 2 (two) other things that I want to highlight in this ride;
  1. Special thanks to RASCM's Prez for securing last-minute sponsorship from Chear Global Sdn Bhd for the ride.
  2. Much appreciation to Karim & family for being an excellent host.  Also, to Mark for allowing us to witness "Mat Salleh" eating durians :D...
